One of the more fascinating arthropods is the Sowbug. Related to crayfish, crabs, and lobsters, this land crustacean resembles a small turtle based on their flat, oval shape and the design of the plate structures on their backs.They prefer a damp environment and dine on decaying organic matter. Sowbugs appear brownish-gray in color and can grow up to three-fourths of an inch in length. Along with two pair of antennae, Sowbugs have seven pair of legs to help them move about.
Sowbugs are not harmful to food, clothing, or furniture. They are just simply a disturbing nuisance to discover in your home. They tend to appear around the close of summer leading into the fall.This is when they leave their preferred soil and leaf litter to crawl into homes by the masses seeking shelter from the cold elements to come. For this reason, Sowbugs are considered one of the overwintering bugs similar to Marmorated Stink Bugs and Lady Bugs.
While they typically enter the home at ground-level, they tend to travel throughout the home in search of moisture, humidity, and decay. They are typically night owls as they work to conserve moisture.
