Patriotism is defined as “love or devotion for one’s country.” While patriotism is often demonstrated through clothing or the launching of fireworks on July 4th, there are many ways patriotism can be shown throughout the year:
1. Fly the Flag
One of the greatest ways to show love for America is to fly the flag. As a general rule, the U.S. flag should only be displayed between sunrise and sunset. When flown around the clock, the U.S. flag must be illuminated in the hours of darkness. You can read more about how to properly treat the flag here.
2. Vote
The United States government was founded on the principle of freedom and being governed “by the people, for the people.” At the time of the constitution’s signing, only white, land-owning men could vote. Over the past two centuries, several minority groups have fought for and secured their right to vote. Voting is an important part of being a U.S. citizen because those running the government are meant to represent you. Voting is your voice. To check your voter registration status, you can click here.
3. Honor Our Troops
There are men and women who dedicate their lives to upholding the freedom of United States daily. Supporting and honoring our troops can be reflected with a simple smile and a work of gratitude or a donation of your time or money to organizations, such as the USO, who support our troops. Many often honor America’s fallen by placing flowers on the graves of soldiers.
4. Study Our History
Learn about this great country, its origins, its traditions, and more. Read a book, watch a documentary, take a class, or visit a museum. Do what it takes to understand how America got to this point in history and what can be done to make a positive change that can affect the future. Studying history provides cultural awareness and understanding as well as an education to make an informed vote.
Don’t just show your patriotism on the 4th of July; be sure to show patriotism year-round!
Have a safe, happy, and fun Independence Day!
