The fall season will be here before we know it, and unfortunately that means prime time for some stealthy, havoc-wreaking, health harming, and extremely fast reproducing rodents to make your roof theirs too. Six mice can turn into sixty within ninety days, so stop them from coming in at all. Fortunately, there are simple ways to avoid having your home overtaken by the enemy (i.e. rats, mice, squirrels). Follow the simple steps below and live cozily this fall and winter with no uninvited guests.

Step 1: Keep your home clean and dry.

A clean and dry home is essential in not attracting hungry pests. Rodents are not the polite type who will wait for a personal dinner invitation. So, don’t give them the temptation. Food and trash that is easily accessible is an open invitation for them to get cozy in your home.

  • Keep ripe fruit in the fridge
  • Wash dishes daily
  • Keep kitchen and bathrooms as dry as possible
  • Sweep and vacuum floors regularly

Step 2:  Deny them entry

Check all around your house for any holes critters can squeeze through. Mice can fit through dime-sized holes and rats through quarter-sized holes, so it’s important to check thoroughly.

  • Use caulk to seal cracks and crevices baseboards, moldings, cupboards, pipes, ducts, sinks, toilets and electrical outlets.
  • Place screens in front of heating and cooling vents.
  • Keep your garden, stacked firewood, and other debris away from the exterior of your home.

Step 3: Inspection

Have a local pest control company, inspect your home for any other possible breech points. The garage, roof, and basement are hard to guard. A pest management professional can give you additional tips and provide services that can further protect your home from being inhabited by unwanted critters.
