While the COVID-19 pandemic quarantine isn’t ideal, it is important to protect your health and the health of your family. Once Netflix and Disney+ are exhausted, here are 10 home improvement projects that can fill the shelter in place time:

1. Plant an Herb Garden

Not only do fresh herbs taste great in your home-cooked meals, but they can also help you keep pests away! Make sure to water the herb garden regularly and plant in an area that receives the right amount of sunlight.

2. Trim Back Trees and Shrubs Around the House

Trees and shrubs are great assets to have in the yard. However, insects and other pests can easily access your roof using low-hanging branches that hang over your house. It is wise to trim these low-hanging or dead limbs from trees each spring. Similarly, it is wise to keep any bushes or shrubs trimmed so that they do not touch the house.

3. Freshen Up The Front Door

Bring a worn-out front door back to life with a splash of color using a fresh coat of paint. Plenty of color ideas can be found online and some retailers will even ship the paints shipped directly to said door. Curb appeal is always a great investment for the home.

4. Clean and Install Window Screens

If window screens were taken down for the winter, now is the time to clean them prior to re-installation. Be sure to inspect the screens for any holes and replace any damaged screens. Now, once installed, enjoy the fresh air they offer!

5. Pressure Wash The Driveway

Remove the dirt and grime off the driveway with a pressure washer. Odds are that if you don’t own one, someone you know does. Otherwise, rentals may be available from your local hardware store or tool rental shop. Just be sure to sanitize any rentals prior to using!

6. Wash All Windows

Depending on location, this can be the messiest time of year for windows. Pollen, fallen petals, and birds migrating back from the south can cause windows to be dirtier than normal. Clean them off, so to enjoy the view even when working indoors.

7. Clean Out Gutters

Clogged gutters are never a good thing. Besides creating structural damage, clogged gutters can be breeding grounds for mosquitos and other critters. It is recommended to clean the home’s gutters twice annually at the start of spring and end of fall.

8. Paint an Accent Wall (or Two)

Brighten up the home’s quarantine space with a fresh coat of paint on an accent wall. Adding a splash of color to any room can help break up the monotony of staying in the same place all day, every day. Find plenty of inspiration for your accent wall online.

9. Schedule An Appointment with A Pest Management Professional

It’s that time of year! All of the pests that left for the winter are starting to emerge again. This is called pest pressure. If it hasn’t been done already, it’s time to schedule the first pest control appointment of the spring. Be sure to let your pest management company know any new infestations or nests around the home.

10. Organize Attic Storage

Though a dreaded activity, now is a great time to clean out the attic’s storage. Remove and get rid of anything not needed. Clearly label and organize the boxes and items to be kept. Next time you need to get something out of the attic, it will be easy to find!
