There are four common types of cockroaches: American, brown-banded, German and oriental. All four types have six legs, an antenna and wings. They are all disease vectors, and can track bacteria into your home.
American Cockroaches are the most common and typically found in households. These cockroaches not native to North America, and were most likely introduced via ships from Africa in the 1600s. Females hatch 150 offspring a year. In appearance, they are oval shaped, and a reddish-brown color. They will eat anything, and live in warm, dark, wet places.
Brown-banded cockroaches often hide their eggs in or under furniture. In terms of looks, they are oval shaped with light bands of color across their wings. Brown-banded cockroaches prefer starchy foods like wallpaper or books. They prefer warm, dry locations and avoid light. Like American cockroaches, they can carry diseases.
German cockroaches can be found all around the world, and they are the most common in the US. They live 100-200 days. German cockroaches are oval shaped, and brown to dark brown in color. They like sweet foods, and toothpaste. They live in warm, damp places, like your kitchen.
Oriental Cockroaches usually travel through sewer pipes and drains. In terms of looks, they are dark brown, almost black in color. They like wet places, and decaying areas. They feed on garbage and other organic materials.
